Have you ever heard the saying, "your hair gets used to a shampoo if you use it for long enough”?

Well, it’s kind of true. It’s not necessarily your hair that gets used to a shampoo or conditioner, it’s your scalp.

Changing seasons = time for new shampoo & conditioner.

The humidity, temperature, and your environment, are all factors that should bring about this change.

Ever notice your scalp gets a little red, itchy, or dehydrated during the brutally cold months? That’s because of the lack of moisture in the air and the dry heat blasting every place you step foot in. These environments can lead to a dehydrated scalp and hair. Using something more moisturizing in the winter months is a must!

My go-to in the winter is Davines Love Curl Shampoo & Conditioner. This moisturizing duo is the best not only to give your hair the hydration it needs, but because it contains extract from the Noto Almond. It is super nourishing for hair and scalp. However, if your hair needs a bit more, Davines Quick Fix Circle is amazing. It’s developed with hyaluronic acid to deliver beautiful hair in just three minutes.

Now we're onto the unpredictable weather of the spring...

momo.jpg

Whether its rainy, windy, or just a beautiful sunny day, a staple for the spring is Davines Momo Shampoo & Conditioner.

It’s still a moisturizing shampoo & conditioner, but a lighter weight, so most textures can enjoy it without worrying about being weighed down.

During the summer, UV rays are something to consider. This is when the scalp and hair takes a beating. From the sun, to chlorinated pools, your scalp and hair need EXTRA loving, especially if you're a blonde. Thank goodness Davines has something for all times of the year. The Su line is a perfect addition to your summertime routine. There is a hair & body wash (super convenient, especially if you're a traveler) that is delicate but hydrating for after sun use. Su/hair milk, which is my personal favorite,  is an amazing leave-in conditioner that protects your hair from the suns rays. There is even a hair mask that helps to nourish sun exposed hair, leaving it soft and silky. Did I mention that they all smell amazing.

Back to school season comes so fast, but that also means it’s time to assess your hair & scalp for any damage caused by the summer months. Maybe we didn't put that hat on or use Su Milk to protect our hair, and it just needs to be revived a little. Davines Melu shampoo & conditioner keeps hair healthy and protected from breakage. This duo has lentil seed extract, meaning they contain amino acids that help to rebuild fragile hair. My new favorite to pair with this cleansing system is Cult + King TONIK. Herbal & organic ingredients in this sustainable spray help to moisturize the scalp, hair follicle, and the hair strands themselves. It also has refills which is amazing if you use it as much as I do!

Transition seasons are such a great time to set new hair habits and go for a new look. With Summer coming to a close and fall creeping in, it might be time to think about the next new look.

We can’t wait to see you!

Cult & King, the new kids at the House.

“What’s in this beautiful bottle?”

This is the question we hear so often.

We thought this is a great opportunity to explain why we’ve added to our product collection, and what we like most about Cult & King. While we LOVE Davines, we want to offer a true range of styling options.

It all started with Mallory’s hunt for the perfect air drying product to allow the freedom of lived-in hair for all types. Did this unicorn product exist? Oh yes it did! After testing over seven hair balms, we finally found the one we loved. Knowing that the line was larger, we were offered a testing kit. We all became obsessed.

Clean and Simple, effective products are what we are all about. “All CULT+KING products are formaldehyde-free. Paraben-free. Petroleum-free. Gluten-free. Propylene glycol-free. Synthetic fragrance-free. Phythalate-free. TEA-, DEA and MEA-free. Mineral oil-free. Synthetic dye-free. Coal tar-free. Synthetic detergent-free. Animal testing-free. Green washing-free. The cleanest products on the market. The less chemicals you put in and on your body, the better for you.”

Then comes the green factor, it’s not a secret that caring for the environment is something that matters to us. We fell in love with the mission of Cult & King: “ WE ARE TRULY, MADLY, DEEPLY ANTI-PLASTIC AND STYROFOAM.”

“We need to abandon “throw away” culture, and we need to do it now. Our beautiful oceans are being ruined. Our landfills are overflowing. We make our packaging beautiful in the hopes that you will reuse and repurpose every piece when it’s empty. It’s also recyclable if you choose to discard it. Our glass,  aluminum, bamboo and wood packaging is made to last a lifetime.“

Not to mention they are proud members of One Percent for the Planet™.  That means we contribute 1% of total sales to environmental organizations working to clean up our world. Learn more at onepercentfortheplanet.org.

PLUS! NO ANIMAL TESTING.

Between loving the planet and being chemical free, we couldn’t turn this product down. Turns out they have the absolute best dry shampoo ever created and we can’t live with out it.

Ask your stylist all about Cult & King, we would love to share more with you!!

All the best and Happy Hair,

Summer sleep Hair for the win

I am constantly being complimented on my hair. At least five times a day, people tell me how much they love my “styling.” Truth is, I do very little, and when I share this with people, I always get the same response: “I wish my hair could do that.” When I tell women I wash my hair once a week, use two products, and never use heat on my hair, I get puzzled looks. Listen, I’m a walking example of living-in, natural texture. I relying on great haircuts, especially straight razor cuts that bring out my wave even more.

Lived-in hair takes a little bit of letting go of the perfect, embracing natural texture, and being ok with a little fluff and frizz. You will have to accept that your hair won’t be the same day-to-day. If you are looking for perfection and 100% frizz free hair, stop reading now. This look wont be for you.

The proper product is what it is all about. Everyone will have a different setting product that will work for them. You may not find it on the first try, and you might initially struggle with the end result. If you stick with it and listen to your stylist’s suggestions, you will get to your goal quicker.

Lastly, and this is important, you need to understand that your wave, curl, or lack either, is what it is. You can’t expect your perfect curls to relax into beach waves, or the reverse.

Check out a little clip of me applying the new Cult & King Balm we will be carrying this week. This is the best lived-in air drying product line I have found, and I’m so excited to be carrying it soon.

To Wash or NOT to Wash … That is the question....

“I haven’t washed my hair in. few days, good thing I m going to the salon today….”

Many people wonder the same thing when planning a trip to the hairdresser: should I wash my hair? I can help answer a few questions to get you a better end result, and save your stylist’s valuable time.

For cutting purposes, it’s best to come in unwashed and dry so the stylist can see how you wear your hair on a normal basis, and how you like it styled. Also, getting shampooed is one of the best parts of the visit. Give us a chance to give you the full effect instead of a “quick wash” because you shampooed that morning.

For color, things can get complicated, and depends on your service type. If you’re getting on-scalp color, say grey coverage or a bleach and tone (fully blonde from root to tip), it’s best you don’t shampoo the day of. You shouldn’t wait more than two days, though. Why? Because natural oils do help protect your scalp from unnecessary irritation, but more than a day or two and your color may not take as well, and not fully cover the grey. Too much natural oils on top of hair products can cause a barrier. Plus, it may force your stylist to have to wash your hair before the service, and not allocate the time to chat with you and give the best possible service.

When foiling, nothing is being applied directly to the scalp (unless you get both grey coverage and foils, of course). In this case, you can go a few days more (if that floats your boat). You will be shampooed before the toning step, and all will be right in the world. Also, if your hair is too clean, it may be difficult for your stylist to grip the soft hair with enough tension.

Balayage. Okay, so I would have to categorized this with foiling. But be mindful of how much product you’ve used. If you can’t run a comb through your hair or you can smell the brand of tequila you drank on Saturday night, do us all a favor, and shampoo lightly with little conditioner.

Dry shampoo might be the best thing since sliced bread, but if you know you’re coming in to see us and you want the best possible results, use your best judgment. Can you run your fingers through? Did you obtain dreadlocks not on purpose? Can you change the oil in your car by ringing out your hair?

So, when in doubt, shampoo the day before your visit. You can’t go wrong.

2019 Spring/ Summer Hair Trends we LOVE!!

So spring is here (even though we still feel the chill of the winter), and us Jersey peeps know how quickly we can go from 50 degree weather to 80 degrees, hot, humid, and flip-flop ready. It’s hard to think that we’ll be on the beach any day now, and it’s only 6 SHORT weeks away from Memorial Day!

What does the change of seasons mean for new looks and cool trends? Loads of fun stuff that we’re excited for!! Here’s the breakdown of a few of our favorite things (Cue Julie Andrews …)

1) HELLO Flat Iron, my one true love …

ech-melu-hair-shield.jpg

Heat Shield

Works up to 450* on wet or dry hair. Perfect for all heat tools.

The beach wave is hot right now. It’s become a new go-to look, and we don’t see that vibe going anywhere, anytime soon. But my high school heart is singing sweet tunes of No Doubt looking at all the super skinny straight hair looks! Living for the mega shiny, smooth straight, late 90’s early 2000’s tresses. Don’t let the PTSD of fried hair stop this look from happening; we have way better tech these days to stop that from happening. There are more sophisticated flat irons, actual heat protection mists, and hair masks with ingredients that are so active you can almost see them dancing in the packages. P.S. if your hair is extra challenging during the humid months ask about our Organic de frizzing treatment that last 5-6 months!!

2) Not so basic BOB

Okay, there’s nothing basic “B” about rocking a one length. This LBD of haircuts might be on my forever hot list. You will see this look all throughout the spring and summer. Celebrities like Kendall Jenner and Karlie Kloss are flaunting this classic look. We love it for fine hair to add density and volume. My personal favorite is seeing this shape on curly hair for some serious volume.

3) Shag is here and lets be clear … it’s still awesome.

Love, Love, and Love me some amazing texture. No secret that a razor shape is something I lean towards these days. The shag is a great go-to for anyone with tons of weight or heavy hair, and AMAZING for curls. A curly bang is some sort of magic we cannot live without seeing this season. Everyone is loving the 60’s/70’s inspo.

4) GREY

No, not the bleached out, crazy silver look that all the cool kids were doing last year. Actual, natural grey hair. The silver fox look is no longer just for the boys or for someone who “ just gave up.” It’s a freedom from color, and the masses are loving it. I personally love the look of my natural grey hair and have rocked it for years. I got bored a few months ago and went blonde again, and now I miss my grey. I’m looking forward to rocking this trend again!

5) Hair Jewels

No not Clairs, or icing. Rad hair accessories that pop. Statement pieces talk. Great to make your lazy day hair look polished, purposeful and awesome.

So who is up for a change? We are in full throttle Spring mode right now and excited for all the seasons looks!!

Shiny Hair?!? YES - Isn’t this what we all want?

First things first; let’s start in the shower.

Shampoo & Conditioner are the foundation of all things shiny. If you are not using the right ones for your texture and hair needs, it can make it more difficult to achieve shiny, healthy hair when styling.

Some of my favorites are:

·        Minu Shampoo & Conditioner. It’s purposely named ‘minu,’ short for ‘illuminating,’ to do just that. Super high in antioxidants, it has all the good things your hair needs for shine.

Screen+Shot+2019-02-23+at+10.53.58+PM.jpg

Gifted

When you spend $30 on take home products you will receive a Spotlight Treatment free. While supplies last.

·        Your Hair Assistant Prep Shampoo & Prep Mild Cream. They are moisturizing and nourishing, but lightweight enough for any hair texture without weighing the hair down.

·        Spotlight Circle. It provides instant shine in just ten minutes. It contains moringa oil and micronized mica powder to smooth and deeply nourish.

Now that we have a foundation, what’s next?

Before putting any styling product into your hair, you must towel dry. This helps to minimize dilution of the product.

There are SO many options for products, but here are a few that give immediate results whether you decide to air dry, diffuse or blowdry.

- Your Hair Assistant Silkening Oil Mist. It helps create shiny, frizz-free, and silky hair.

I love spraying this on, whether I’m letting my hair be curly or blowdrying. This product is meant for all hair types, too.

  • More Inside Moisturizing Relaxing Fluid. It gives you slight control over curls, but it’s great for frizz when you are blowdrying or diffusing, thus creating soft, shiny and moisturized hair. Or you can use it dry, to re-moisturize curls for extra shine**

  • Invisible Serum. This gem helps with frizz while having a really flexible hold. Creates a beautiful satiny finish and can be used wet or dry…but a little goes a long way here. **

**Application tip: put on hands as if you were putting on lotion, then distribute through hair evenly.

Blow-drying?

Nozzle-on is a must! This helps to direct the heat and make sure you follow your brush with your blowdryer to seal the cuticle and eliminate frizz, making it easier to achieve optimal shine with the products you chose. ( If you want to learn how to style your hair 1-on-1 we can schedule time as a blow dry class. Giving you a little extra hands on know how.)

Need a little something extra for that night out? A finishing product can help accomplish your beautiful look, and can be as simple as a hairspray or a wax depending on your texture.

  • More Inside Shine Wax. This golden little pot is AMAZING. Meant to be used on dry hair, it gives a beautiful glossy and sleek effect. It’s not sticky and super flexible, so you don’t have to worry about it weighing your hair down.

  •     More Inside. This is a shimmering mist. Not only does this aerosol shine-spray do its job, it smells fantastic. I promise you won’t be disappointed with the results!

Next time you are in the salon, please ask about any of the products above. We are here to help and guide you to the best products available to achieve results specifically for your hair.

xoxo & Happy Hair,

Liz C.
