I Have Curly Hair ... Do I Get A Curly Cut?

So you have curly hair and not sure if the Curly Cut is for you? Let’s be honest; it isn’t for everyone with curly hair, so how do you know if this cut is for you?

Lets talk about curls and what they actually are—it is called a texture. Hair texture is not something your hair stylist can make during a haircut. We are magical, but not wizards. We can not make straight hair become curly by adding layers, or curly hair lay straight by leaving your length. While the shape of your cut can add or detract from your natural texture, no amount of cutting (or lack of cutting) will make you hair texture change. PHEW. I am so excited we cleared the air on that one! Now, knowing your haircut won’t change what your hair is capable of doing, the WAY your hair is cut for your texture WILL make a difference. So are you a Curly Cut peep? Maybe!

Determining your hair type is one way to figure this out. Check out the chart: each type of texture is

classified in a type.

Type 1, which is straight hair, this person has ZERO curl or movement to their hair.

Type 2 is ideal for beachy, lived-in cuts that say Boho all day every day. Our favorite texture for razor cutting, but that is not really a candidate for a Curly Cut.

Type 3 is where we get into a “can go either way” conversation. If you are the type of person who loves your curls but also wears you hair straight, we wouldn't suggest a Curly Cut. Now, if you are ready to embrace and solely wear your hair in your natural, universe-given curl, then baby your texture can do it. Type 3 ‘A’ curls have the most flexibility, and often times, in our experience, are not commonly committal to a Curly Cut. We highly suggest a consultation to determine if your life style vibes that way.

Type 4. GIRL GET IN MY CHAIR. Swoon isn’t even the word. Type 4 is a hard YES. Unless you relax your hair, a Curly Cut will give definition, separation, and allow shape and movement to happen. I have cut 4 ‘C’ kinky hair to help pull out curly definition. It is 100% possible to get lightness and a soft, defined silhouette within all of the Type 4 family, with the right cut.

What happens when you come in for a Curly Cut?

Well, first it starts with you coming in with your natural texture. We recommend washing, conditioning, and applying minimal (NO oil based, or wax based)product to the hair either the night before and air drying or diffused. Your hair needs to be be clean and fully dry, with out dents from pony tails, hair bands or pins. The Curly Consultation/Cut/ Style At this time we discuss what the goals are for you and your curls. We address length, curl pattern, health of your curls, and overall shape or silhouette of your locks.

After a shape is determined, we then begin the cut. Literally, each curl is cut one by one to the exact length and bend of a curl. By addressing each curl, we are able to focus on how much spring your curl has, allow weight and movement to release, and give you accurate length. Focusing on a silhouette and overall shape, and working in small detailed sections, create a seamless balance to the cut. After the cut, we shampoo and apply a deep conditioning mask. Our go-to is by Davines LOVE Curl Mask. “Ideal for workable wavy to curly hair. It has an extra nourishing and conditioning power. Gives intense softness, nourishment and hydration also to very thick and unruly hair.” We allow for the product to sit and absorb into the hair for anywhere from 10-20 min.

Then we rinse and add a leave-in conditioner that is specially chosen for your hair. Over top, we apply coordinating product. Then we set the curls by a twist and shake approach, which is a NEED TO KNOW method to stying for Curly peeps. You will be given a full lesson during your cut. Dry & Finish Depending on your curl, you will either dry under a hooded dryer or diffuse. We dry your hair 100% and address the shape again, detailing additional curls when needed.

Voila ! The whole process takes anywhere from 1.5 to 3 hours. It is not a rushed services and requires a lot of detailed steps. We recommend most of our clients to come back between 4-6 months for re-shaping.
